The discovery of mnemonics can be credited to the Greek Poet Simonides (447 BC).Įarly Greek philosophers used the term ‘mnemonics’ to refer to tricks that bridged the gap between what is known and what is unknown (familiar-mnemonic-unfamiliar). For instance, one might remember the numbers in a password by associating them with familiar birth dates, addresses, or room numbers. The American Psychological Association (APA) dictionary defines mnemonics as “any device or technique used to assist memory, usually by forging a link or association between the new information previously encoded. In other words, a device that enhances the process of encoding and recall is called a mnemonic device. In psychology, a mnemonic device can be understood as the techniques and aids that can be used by a person to improve the probability of remembering something. Therefore, both these words are related to memory and remembering, just like in modern times. Apart from this, a sister term from which the current word mnemonic is derived is ‘mnemosyne’ which was used in ancient Greek for remembrance. The term is derived from the ancient Greek word ‘mnēmonikos’ which means memory or related to memory. A mnemonic device/ memory aid/ memory device/ mnemonic system or simply mnemonic is a cognitive tool that assists in the matters concerning learning and memory.
